the wife and I are taking a trip to scandinavia this summer. we’ll be leaving june 12th from sfo. it’s mostly to see my dad who will be 95 years old this year and to see my swedish family. i have an aunt and two uncles still kicking as well as a few cousins and a couple 2nd cousins. we are even trying to organize a family gathering. at the end of it we’re taking a cruise from copenhagen to norway (3 stops) and then 1 stop in kiel, germany. so i said to myself, “self. i wonder if there’s a chance we could possibly get to a EURO 2024 match in germany?”

what would be involved? the last port of call on the cruise is kiel, germany on July 6th. the next day we’d disembark in copenhagen and fly home the same day. I know, risky, but we should have about 5 hours between cruise arrival and the flight departure. so i looked at the EURO2024 fixture schedule. There are two match quarter-final matches that day. one at 6pm in dusseldorf and one at 900pm in berlin. the day before there’s a match in hamburg, which would have been perfect. so we’d get off the ship in kiel (9am arrival) and take the train to berlin. I’d have to change our flight from the direct flight on July 7th from copenhagen >>> sfo to berlin>>>copenhagen>>>sfo. hopefully there’d be an early flight from berlin to copenhagen. i haven’t looked at that yet. i’d also have to get a hotel room that night in berlin. finding a hotel room in berlin that night might be a challenge.

the next thing i looked at was how to get tickets and the price. here’s what I found on stub hub –

kind of pricey for us but within the realm of possibility. all this would add over a grand to the price of our trip which we’ve already spent a shitload of money on. i’m gonna do some legwork and see what’s possible. I doubt it’s gonna happen but it’s nice to dream.

        so there are possibilities …

train from kiel to berlin with a change in hamburg.

this shows where everything is and approximate hotel prices for that night. where it says berlin in big letters is where the train station is. lower left is where the stadium. upper middle-left is the airport.

here’s what it might cost to add the berlin>>>copenhagen flight the next morning. flight would arrive copenhagen about 2 1/2 hours before our copenhagen>>>sfo flight.

distance from the train station to the stadium is about 7 miles/12 km.

gotta add in a couple taxi rides.

so all that’s left is money which we won’t have for a couple of weeks. so it’s possible. now I just need to convince the wife. that’s probably gonna be the hardest part.

I started clicking on the stub-hub tickets and everything under $1000 has been sold. So unless I hit the lotto in the next few weeks, this isn’t going to happen. Oh well, it was a nice dream.

That’s too bad, James. I hope you still can make it
Shame how expensive tournament tickets have gotten $$$
I sat midfield with my dad at the Germany England Euro96 Sf and I remember it cost 60 pounds

Maybe go see a match from the Swedish or Norwegian league? Both should be in full swing and maybe you can see the next Haaland. Would cost a lot less too.

swedish first division – allsvenskan takes a break during the euros.

norwegian first division takes a twenty-five day break starting june 3rd.
