*Key – All categories like Top Earner, Key Player, etc are determined by FM.
This is the 23rd season for the Dynasty Liga U-21 League.
Flamengo completed a historic three-peat, winning the U21 trophy for the third season in a row. The faces have changed. But consistency has been Flamengo’s dominant feature for three consecutive seasons.
Season 23 Teams:
BOCA JUNIORS (32/3)
Owner: BLAUGRANA
Assistant Manager: Tite
Captain: Arnau Tenas
Top Earner: Benoît Badiashile
Lowest Earner: Aleix Garrido
Key Player: Gavi
Hot Prospect: Matheus Gonçalves
Zizou’s Key Player: Saël Kumbedi
Oldest Player: Bryan Gil, 21
Youngest Player: Lovro Zvonarek, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 12th
Last Season Finish: 11th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 13th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 9/1Key Categories led: Corners, Long Shots
Zizou’s Thoughts: Boca Juniors received a rude welcome to the league in their maiden voyage, finishing 11th on the table. This season’s side sees notable attacking options up front that will have to make up for the loss of Julian Álvarez to promotion. New faces like Florian Wirtz, Lovro Zvonarek and Fabricio Díaz will join returning stars in Gavi and Benoît Badiashile to form a formidable presence in each of Boca’s match days. The aggressiveness of GM Blaugrana’s decision-making, shipping out Armel Bella-Kotchap and William Saliba in the off-season for upgrades at other teams and other positions and shrewd spending to upgrade Boca will reflect his long-term plan to transform the club into a potential superstar factory. Saël Kumbedi will operate the right flank for Boca and he’ll have to be a key player as there are depth issues at RB behind him at least to start the season.
FLAMENGO (32/3)
Owner: ProPAIN
Assistant Manager: Marcelo Gallardo
Captain: Tanguy Nianzou
Top Earner: Nuno Mendes
Lowest Earner: Malamine Efekele
Key Player: Nuno Mendes
Hot Prospect: Roony Bardghji
Zizou’s Key Player: Joško Gvardiol
Oldest Player: Patrick Wimmer, 21
Youngest Player: Julian Rijkhoff, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 4th
Last Season Finish: 1st
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 6th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 11/2Key Categories led: Fitness
Zizou’s Thoughts: For a third season in a row, Flamengo captured the U21 Championship, leading the table for nearly the entire season for the better part of the last three, highlighting the greatest era for any manager at U21 in Liga history. Compared to the Senior leagues, the U21 league sees much more yearly turnover due to graduations & early promotion. This makes ProPAIN’s feat of winning three titles in a row that much more impressive. From Leao & de Ligt in 2020 to Havertz & Mount in 2021 to Tonali & Camavinga last year, the baton has passed for Flamengo every season and after season, the call has been answered. And now the call rings again for the chance to win a fourth and teams as dogged as ever to knock them off their perch. Despite having lost key players to trade and graduation, it would be silly to write-off ProPAIN and Flamengo in their bid to make it four titles in a row. The new inclusions of David Datro Fofana, Bradley Barcola and the season loan for Patrick Wimmer provide GM ProPAIN ample offensive weapons with which to defend their title and there are no notable weaknesses on paper for Flamengo, giving them the edge once again heading into this season.
GUADALAJARA (32/3)
Owner: james
Assistant Manager: Roberto Di Zerbi
Captain: Stefano Turati
Top Earner: Anthony Elanga
Lowest Earner: Matchoi Djaló
Key Player: Xavi Simons
Hot Prospect: Rayan Vitor
Zizou’s Key Player: Ez Abde
Oldest Player: João Gomes, 21
Youngest Player: Newertton,17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 13th
Last Season Finish: 2nd
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 9th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 7/1Key Categories led: None
Zizou’s Thoughts: History will likely only remember Flamengo’s history three peat and not the brave challenge Chivas put forth, giving them a run for their money for the better part of U21 Season 22. Hanging with Flamengo for as long as they could, they ultimately proved to be no match for the defending Champions, finishing 2nd in the table. Key promotions which in turn become key losses for Chivas include Luke Thomas, Martín Satriano and Raphael Onyedika – all of whom featured heavily last season. Anthony Elanga and Fabio Carvalho return and welcome newcomers Álvaro Rodríguez and Arthur Vermeeren in what will have to be a new-look, well-rounded side. Ultimately, their biggest upgrades will come from within as Xavi Simons, Alejandro Balde and Ez Abde look primed to up their contribution for James and Chivas Guadalajara.
LA GALAXY (32/3)
Owner: Ramer
Assistant Manager: Kieran McKenna
Captain: António Silva
Top Earner: Ander Barrenetxea
Lowest Earner: Felix Afena-Gyan
Key Player: Ander Barrenetxea
Hot Prospect: Dennis Seimen
Zizou’s Key Player: António Silva
Oldest Player: Félix Correia, 21
Youngest Player: Tom Rothe, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 11th
Last Season Finish: 13th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 5th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 11/2Key Categories led: Aggression, Balance
Zizou’s Thoughts: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…. there was the dawning of a new era. When a new GM inherits his teams, it is often the U21 team that provides the most immediate satisfaction. For starters, the players first released can be instantly replaced via free agency. And it’s much easier to put your stamp on a youth team while allocating less of your high value assets than either Senior team. Ramer continued Roberdino’s journey in starting his own, keeping players António Silva, Josh Doig and Tino Livramento and adding some major players via free agency in Oscar Gloukh, trade in Johann Lepenant, Amad Diallo, Tyler Morton and Adil Aouchiche. GM Ramer inherited a team with a lot of graduations with last season’s Crew not paying off for Roberdino. With many a hole to fill, GM Ramer assembled a fine roster with quality depth in every position. That kind of easy acclimation and performance in acquiring all of this talent is all anyone can hope for at first. So, you can say things are off to a fantastic start.
LAFC (32/3)
Owner: Zizou
Assistant Manager: Javier Mascherano
Captain: Eric García
Top Earner: Ansu Fati
Lowest Earner: Jelle Van Neck
Key Player: Ansu Fati
Hot Prospect: Jorrel Hato
Zizou’s Key Player: Charles De Ketelaere
Oldest Player: Eric García, 21
Youngest Player: Mika Godts, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 1st
Last Season Finish: 4th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 1st
Odds to win Championship (FM): 2/1Key Categories led: Anticipation, Determination, Passing, Tackling
Zizou’s Thoughts: Picked by Football Manager to win for the third season in a row, it surely has to happen this year for LAFC shouldn’t it? Much like their real life version, LAFC has had high expectations from the start and has come up short time and again, finishing fourth in each of the last two seasons. Not since U21 Season 18 with Dynamo Dresden has Zizou tasted U21 glory. Some players in their final year of eligibility like Eric García, Charles De Ketelaere, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Malick Thiaw and Khephren Thuram are surely seeking to write this chapter of LAFC history. With new faces Mika Godts and Jorrel Hato looking to take this club into the future after this season, it will stand to be decided whether they finally add hardware to the mantel. LAFC like all the others have not been able to overcome the threat of Flamengo and will look for this season to be different.
NEWELL’S OLD BOYS (32/3)
Owner: Kawai
Assistant Manager: Thomas Frank
Captain: Victor Kirstiansen
Top Earner: Anthony Gordon
Lowest Earner: Denis Franchi
Key Player: Michael Olise
Hot Prospect: Alfie Devine
Zizou’s Key Player: Evan Ferguson
Oldest Player: Keane Lewis-Potter, 21
Youngest Player: Stefan Bajčetić, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 7th
Last Season Finish: 8th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 12th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 8/1Key Categories led: None
Zizou’s Thoughts: How cruel is fate at times? Two seasons ago in GM Kawai’s first season, Newell’s Old Boys almost went all the way. Falling short like a gazelle being stalked to death by the Cheetahs of Flamengo, they could not help but be overcome down the stretch. Still, a second place finish was a hell of an accomplishment especially in one’s first season. Last year will surely have been a disappointment. This year will only up the stakes. Gone is back stopper Illan Meslier and midfield maestro Conor Gallagher, both players promoted. Gone are Moises Caicedo and Armando Broja, both traded before their U21 eligibility had expired. But Newell’s and Kawai are banking big on their moves. In needing to replace the exodus of a glut of players and making 13 free agency bids as a result, Kawai will look to his established returning players in Michael Olise and Anthony Gordon to help acclimate the likes of Lewis Hall, Leon King Victor Kristiansen. The introductions of Hall and Kristiansen will certainly look down that left flank position for years to come. The question is, can they live up to their once hype or was it just a fleeting glimpse?
NEW YORK RED BULLS (32/2)
Owner: JR
Assistant Manager: Wayne Rooney
Captain: Mateo Tanlongo
Top Earner: Piero Hinapié
Lowest Earner: Juan Sforza
Key Player: Jurriën Timber
Hot Prospect: Kobbie Mainoo
Zizou’s Key Player: Alejandro Garnacho
Oldest Player: Gaizka Ayesa, 21
Youngest Player: Kobbie Mainoo, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 3rd
Last Season Finish: 10th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 7th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 11/2Key Categories led: Acceleration
Zizou’s Thoughts: A quiet trade window means that GM JR had to replace nine callups, not counting the additional releases, at U21. An aggressive free agency approach meant a lot of money spent but some real talent the likes of Gabri Veiga and Nicolas Jackson will join the forces at NYRB. The sole trade made for U21 in the acquisition of Facundo Pellistri may prove beneficial but Red Bull’s wings of Nico Williams and Alejandro Garnacho are as good a 1-2 as there are in the league. Once Champions (Season 19), New York has since been missing hardware but have a formidable side that can pose a real threat to Flamengo’s reign should the manager sort out the tactics. One would think the established Jurriën Timber and Yunus Musah will have to have big seasons in order for NYRB to achieve their goals this season. However if they don’t, with only 4 outfielders in their final year of eligibility, this young Red Bulls team will look to be a thorn in the side for seasons to come.
OTTAWA ATLÉTICO (32/3)
Owner: Gooner
Assistant Manager: Patrick Vieira
Captain: Fabio Miretti
Top Earner: Giorgio Scalvini
Lowest Earner: Kerr Smith
Key Player: Karim Adeyemi
Hot Prospect: Archie Gray
Zizou’s Key Player: Adam Hložek
Oldest Player: Folarin Balogun, 21
Youngest Player: Ashley Phillips, 17
Average Age: 18Last Season Prediction (FM): 14th
Last Season Finish: 9th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 10th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 15/2Key Categories led: None
Zizou’s Thoughts: There was arguably no bigger shock move and no bigger splash than Jobe Bellingham’s brother being traded for a monster package. The gleam in Gooner’s eye must’ve faded the day the decision was made. And if not for the overpayment, it’s certain that no deal would have been made. As a man would have to be insane to deal Belly. That is what Ottleti now have to contend with. In the gaping absence of Belly, two key pieces from the trade will surely feature as newcomers Fabio Miretti and Giorgio Scalvini will join free agency coups Rico Lewis, Wisdom Amey and new acquisition Adam Hložek to signal a new era for Gooner’s U21. With that said, the inexperienced youth that will need to be relied on is pretty large and thus, Football Manager has predicted they will finish bottom of the league.
PALMEIRAS (32/3)
Owner: evilo
Assistant Manager: Didier Deschamps
Captain: Sivert Mannsverk
Top Earner: Mykhaylo Mudryk
Lowest Earner: Robin Risser
Key Player: Mykhaylo Mudryk
Hot Prospect: Eliesse Ben Seghir
Zizou’s Key Player: Rayan Cherki
Oldest Player: Mykhaylo Mudryk, 21
Youngest Player: João Veloso, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 2nd
Last Season Finish: 3rd
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 2nd
Odds to win Championship (FM): 4/1Key Categories led: Bravery, Composure, Vision, Strength
Zizou’s Thoughts: Risky trades in acquiring Rayan Cherki, Manu Koné, Georginio Rutter, Armando Broja, Jacob Ramsey and Ousmane Diomande give Palmeiras plenty of optimism heading into this season. Despite high expectations, Palmeiras couldn’t keep up for the duration of the season and were the last horse to fall out of what became the two-horse race between Flamengo and Guadalajara, finishing 3rd in a very crowded field. Certainly an improvement over 8th & 5th, their prior season finishes respectively, but not what GM evilo had been hoping for. Renewed optimism in São Paulo thrives for the Brazilian giants as the returning Gonçalo Ramos and Ukie Superstar Mykhailo Mudryk will lead the line for Palmeiras, combining with free agent signings Sivert Mannsverk and Caleb Okoli in a completely revamped side that will see Mudryk the only returning player from Palmeiras’ last Starting XI.
SÃO PAULO FC (32/3)
Owner: LITN
Assistant Manager: Steven Gerrard
Captain: Curtis Jones
Top Earner: Harvey Elliott
Lowest Earner: Melvin Zinga
Key Player: Harvey Elliott
Hot Prospect: Isaac Babadi
Zizou’s Key Player: Brian Brobbey
Oldest Player: Curtis Jones, 21
Youngest Player: Isaac Babadi, 17
Average Age: 20Last Season Prediction (FM): 9th
Last Season Finish: 14th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 4th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 5/1Key Categories led: Work Rate, Teamwork, Free Kick Taking
Zizou’s Thoughts: In what will be his first full season at the helm, GM LITN will look to a slightly older team, the oldest in the league, with a remade team much changed from the one last season. But you wouldn’t really know it if you looked at his lineup with all but 4 players available to retain their place in the Starting XI. Certainly one of the acquisitions of the off-season was Armel Bella-Kotchap joining São Paulo as part of the one of the largest deals of the period. And while the losses of Ryan Gravenberch and Wirtz in the deal, two players difficult to replace at this level, LITN certainly did well for himself in acquiring Jakub Kaminski, Bjorn Meijer, Santi Giménez, Dango Ouattara and all-around stand-up gentleman Alex Baena via free agency, a fantastic crop of excellent young talent that will bode well for São Paulo now and in the future. Tactically, LITN’s reliance on closer-to-ready players in the pipeline means that they are made to contend and contend with right away.
CS SFAXIEN (32/3)
Owner: Zooka7
Assistant Manager: Kolo Touré
Captain: Abakar Sylla
Top Earner: Jhon Durán
Lowest Earner: Joshua Wynder
Key Player: Nathan Collins
Hot Prospect: Leny Yoro
Zizou’s Key Player: Momo Cho
Oldest Player: Odilon Kossounou, 21
Youngest Player: Ferrán Quetglas, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 5th
Last Season Finish: 12th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 14th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 14/1Key Categories led: Jumping Reach, Positioning, Heading, Marking
Zizou’s Thoughts: Speaking of first full seasons at the helm, new GM Zooka7 will debut in Dynasty Liga this season taking the helm for the irreplaceable Luigi. And while he remade each of his teams to put his stamp on them, Sfaxien was not immune to the slew of changes. Only 3 players from the last Starting XI are eligible to return this season, as the rest were cut, moved or promoted. The slate is completely clean for Sfaxien and for Z7, as well and sometimes, that is the best place to be. Z7 made 13 individual U21 bids including aggressive trades for Momo Cho and Nathan Collins. Aggressiveness notwithstanding, the name of the game for any GM is asset management, especially while one is just starting to put his fingerprints on his clubs. And while there were a number of players that would have and could have contributed towards a potentially better and more successful Sfaxien team, Z7 chose to elevate some players early like Moises Caicedo, El Bilal Touré & Noah Sadiki among others to “spread the wealth” and make the more important teams better, providing the younger and lesser established players at Sfaxien a chance to flourish.
SEATTLE SOUNDERS (32/3)
Owner: Santiger Munez
Assistant Manager: Rúben Amorim
Captain: Nicolas Seiwald
Top Earner: Yeremy Pino
Lowest Earner: Daouda Guindo
Key Player: Yeremy Pino
Hot Prospect: Gabriël Misehouy
Zizou’s Key Player: Lee Kang-in
Oldest Player: Lassina Traoré, 21
Youngest Player: Filippo Mané, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 3rd
Last Season Finish: 5th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 5th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 11/2Key Categories led: Pace, Flair, Technique, Dribbling, Finishing, Penalties
Zizou’s Thoughts: Despite his initial reluctance to increase U21 roster sizes, GM Santiger Munez has utilized the expanded rosters to fortify as strong a Sounders team as he’s built. Whether that can be attributed to the additional spots only he can say but the plan appears to be taking shape. Aggressively zeroing in on high-value free agency targets like Pedrinho and Micky Van de Ven combined with new trade acquisitions Yeremi Pino, Lee Kang-In & Hugo Ekitike have revamped the Sounders, transforming them into a legitimate threat this season. Last season’s fifth-place finish only seemed to inspire changes within the Sounders organization and the changes that have taken place are a sign of that. With that said, there are some areas of concern for Seattle especially out wide on defense, where there will have to be much of a platoon job to cover if reinforcements are required.
VASCO DA GAMA (32/3)
Owner: Xavi4life
Assistant Manager: Marcelo Bielsa
Captain: Manuel Ugarte
Top Earner: Danilo
Lowest Earner: Kaiky Melo
Key Player: Manuel Ugarte
Hot Prospect: Lorran
Zizou’s Key Player: Thiago Almada
Oldest Player: Luiz Henrique, 21
Youngest Player: Guilherme Biro, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 10th
Last Season Finish: 6th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 3rd
Odds to win Championship (FM): 9/2Key Categories led: Decisions, First Touch, Leadership, Agility, Stamina, Concentration, Off The Ball, Crossing
Zizou’s Thoughts: The former U21 Champions (Season 14, Season 17) pride themselves on their scouting. And ultimately, a third and a sixth place finish in the last two seasons haven’t felt like they’ve been good enough. But Vasco and GM xavi4life pride themselves on their scouting so much because they believe in it. And they believe in it so much that they only recruit in South America, having the ultimate distinction of being specially-run. And despite those, what some would call “obstacles” in scouting and player recruitment, the expectation never changes. The expectation remains as ever; a return to glory. And despite a transfer window he’d tell you himself that he bungled and could have gone better, the elation that he felt after it was over said it all; he believes. The understated free agency acquisitions might seem underwhelming in 2023 but if history is any indication, some of them won’t be come this time a year or two from now. However, despite the recent pickups, strength for xavi4life will come in the form of their returning star players Yuri Alberto, Manuel Ugarte and Danilo dos Santos. Short of a long-term injury to Luan Cândido, Vasco’s lone natural LB, it should be another exciting campaign for Vasco as they look to reclaim their spot on the U21 throne.
WYDAD CASABLANCA (32/3)
Owner: Xerxes
Assistant Manager: Walid Regragui
Captain: Bafodé Diakité
Top Earner: Noni Madueke
Lowest Earner: Djeidi Gassama
Key Player: Noni Madueke
Hot Prospect: Arda Güler
Zizou’s Key Player: Destiny Udogie
Oldest Player: Ersin Destanoğlu, 21
Youngest Player: Kenan Yıldız, 17
Average Age: 19Last Season Prediction (FM): 8th
Last Season Finish: 7th
This Season Predicted Finish (FM): 11th
Odds to win Championship (FM): 8/1Key Categories led: Free Kick Taking
Zizou’s Thoughts: The end of last season proved that the best spell of play for Wydad, leading them to a 7th place finish on the table, one they likely would have improved upon if the season were longer. This unfortunately is the downside of a long season. Form will come and go. What remains are your ideas. For Xerxes, the idea was clear as he brought in 12 new faces via free agency and 2 additionally through trade. The plethora of talent out wide is remarkable with Noni Madueke and Kamaldeen Sulemana available at opposite wings. The array of budding maestros is also apparent as new boys Bilal El Khannouss and Fares Chaibi give Xerxes plenty to be excited about. And despite the slew of changes and additions made at Wydad, all but 3 players from their last Starting XI are able to return. Ultimately, however, much of their talent is very raw and still very young so depth on this team will provide a challenge should it be tested as Xerxes, among others, is still searching for that illusive first league championship with now everything to play for.

April 18, 2023 at 8:53 am #11950Thanks man !
This time I’ll try to beat expectations !
Though this U21 season will be tough given my complete overhaul. I was all in last year with seven 2000 born starters, including Fofana, Lacroix, Vitinha, Tchouameni and Gouiri who were the backbone of my teams. Heck, my best backups were Simakan and Caqueret who were 2000 too. Disappointed not to get better than 3rd tbh.
So I was worried how competitive my team would be this year with huge movements (and I didn’t want to weak my two senior teams in trades).
So I’m pretty happy to see I was arguably able to get better at least on paper. We’ll see and there are many teams that will be hard to beat, starting with the unbeatable Flamengo. Top 5 is a good target for this younger team.

April 29, 2023 at 3:22 am #12012Not expecting much as I need FM to catch up to the players in some cases. I think a lot of the season will rely on Colombo bringing the goals or not. Either way this team will only go so far, but I wasn’t aiming to win this division at all.

UPDATE AFTER ROUND 12, MID-SEASON:
Looking to pull off an incredible Four-peat, ProPAIN’s Flamengo have drawn a 4-point lead atop the table through 12 rounds. The seams in mid-table are starting to open with a widening gap separating the top half from the bottom so time is of the essence for teams to make their moves. Boca Juniors’ Lorenzo Colombo and Wydad’s Arnaud Kalimuendo lead the goalscorers chart.
